Freedom Fridays:
5pm-6pm @ Dupont Circle

Every Friday, people across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. descend upon Dupont Circle at 6pm, for Freedom Friday.

The purpose of the demonstration is to talk to our neighbors, talk to one another, and reclaim public space for the growing social, economic injustice, anti-war movements and liberation struggles.

Organizers were inspired by the 2024 Gaza Solidarity Encampments, which spread across the country in protest to Israel’s genocide in Gaza. Facing intense repression, the encampments were shut down by the Biden Administration and University Officials, with over 3,000 students being arrested, the largest numbers since the Vietnam War-era protests. The summer of 2024 saw universities change their legal codes to effectively outlaw future encampments and suppress pro-Palestinian organizing.

Freedom Friday seeks to create a new space for organizing, expanding the university to the public commons through public assemblies and education.

Every Friday, after 5pm, you can find organizers, community members, commuters, antiwar activists, students, tourists, and more in Dupont Circle, engaging in conversation, both on Israel’s genocide in Gaza, the future of the Movement For A Free Palestine, as well as campaigns for equality, justice, and freedom for Washingtonians in Washington D.C. The container is multi-faceted, from discussions, art-builds, vigils, and marches, the character of Freedom Friday molds to the folks that attend. We like to say, a space is only the people that make it up.
